On 11th October 2024, at the National Convention Centre, Vientiane, Lao PDR, His Excellency Sonexay SIPHANDONE, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR participated in the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Leaders’ Meeting on the sideline of the 2024 ASEAN Summits. The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Mr. Shigeru ISHIBA, Prime Minister of Japan, with leaders, delegates and representative of AZEC partner countries actively attended the event, namely: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam.
This AZEC leaders meeting highly valued the effort in building a clean energy supply chain through the development cooperation projects of zero-emission industrial areas and the collaboration between various business sectors and other international organizations aimed to accelerating the green energy transition, and environmentally friendly energy for sustainable future.
The Lao PDR has also pursued its energy policy toward prioritizing and generating electricity from renewable energy sources aimed at building an effective energy development and ensuring adequate electricity supply, while minimizing the impact on the environment, particularly, reducing carbon (Co2) emission from thermal power through coal energy and other fossil fuels.
Additionally, the meeting jointly adopted the AZEC Leaders’ Joint Statement for achieving net zero emissions as an action plan for the next decade.
